French mots croisés and mots cachés

There are always those times when you need to have something to "fill in" a time slot within your French class lessons.  A great way to do this is with mots croisés or mots cachés.  They work well with a variety of classes, grade levels or ability levels.

When can I use these? ... you may be asking yourself.  --- Here are a few ideas for you:

  • 1. early finishers
  • 2. for a substitute teacher if you are away from class
  • 3. as class start ups while your class settles and you take attendance
  • 4. when your lesson finishes early -- and YES that does happen from time to time
  • 5. when the technology that you wanted to use is not working
  • 6. as a supplement to your themed lessons about a particular French unit
  • 7. on test day for students who finish writing their test before the allotted time frame

I have put together a product line of resources with mots cachés and mots croisés with vocabulary included to help with these scenarios. You may not have the time to make these kinds of activities on your own as you focus on the initial French lessons for your students.

Here are a few to look at:

Other themed areas include the following:

la Suisse

le Sénégal

Madagascar

Paris, France

la Belgique

French Speaking Activities

If you are like most Core French language teachers you are always looking for ways to include speaking activities in your lessons. Without practising speaking French your students will certainly be at a disadvantage should they have the opportunity to travel to a French speaking place in the future.  Additionally, if a French speaking tourist comes to your home town, it is wonderful when your students come into the class to tell you that they were able to help someone out while out in their community.

Here are a few ways to include French speaking in your classrooms.

1.  Have French speaking only "French Fridays".  My students always loved this!  (When it is a successful day, I like to offer students a "board game" day in the near future"

2.  Have story time games where one student begins a story by saying a French sentence and another student continues along.  Each student tells another portion of the story.  They can get SO creative with their stories.  Imagination is amazing!

3. Show a picture on the class screen and have students work in small groups to take turns describing the picture. It's best to try to choose a picture that could be a springboard to a "story" or "scenario" - being at the post office, heading out on a trip, running into a friend, etc.

You will find that I have also included some speaking activities within my resources.  Take a look here!

French Activities for Senegal

If you have the "travel bug" and have ventured to countries around the world, you may have visited Africa!  Senegal, a French speaking country in Africa is a great one to highlight in your French lessons.  It gives your students the opportunity to explore a country other than their own and learn about the vast differences in culture. How does the food of Senegal differ from what they might have at home? Is the school life different? What about transportation, government, music, just to name a few areas of interest for your students.

I have a French bundle of activities that will help you teach a unit about "le Senegal" and allow you to use a variety of resources in your lessons.

Your students will be able to do some or all of these activities:

    1. a webquest in either English or French

    2. a French sentence completions activity

    3. a mots cachés/word search

    4. a digital/on-line drag & drop activity with culture photos

    5. a printable Senegal matching game for small group activities

    6. Internet Research blogging activity - great for seniors!

I also have a FREEBIE available to you too! Get it here!

I hope you will find something here to help you with your French lessons!

Jour de la marmotte French activities

I'm not sure about you, but I know that every year we are talking about whether "Phil" the Groundhog is going to see his shadow or not. Is there a festivity in your town focusing on this? Do you know the name of your town's groundhog. They aren't all named "Phil" but the most popular one seems to be.

It's certainly not a French holiday or special event but it certainly is something that is on many people's minds. This year, on Feb. 2. I will be anxious to see if our groundhog sees his shadow or not. Will there be 6 more weeks of winter?  (I personally hope not)

Will you be doing activities with your students about "Jour de la marmotte"? Here are some fun activities that will surely keep your students focussed. They are great for individual activities, or in pairs.  Set them up as station work activities as a change of pace in your room. Or leave them for a substitute teacher as they are all easy to implement! Here's what my Jour de la marmotte resource includes:

If you start with the reading activity all of the other activities will easily fall into place.  I've included answer keys too so that if you choose to collect the work as part of your curriculum OR if you are going over the answers together, you will have the answer key ready to go.

"Phil! Do you see your shadow?"
